Public briefings

Dr Meredith Shafto, a Research into Ageing fellow at the University of Cambridge, gave a stimulating talk at the Masonic Hall in Cambridge, organised by the Cambridge Committee. She spoke about 'tip of the tongue' memory shortfalls, where a familiar word is inexplicably temporarily unavailable. These cause frustration for many older people, as well as making others think that older people are poor communicators or even senile. Her research findings could lead to treatments and highlight unfair stereotyping of people with communication problems.

Research into Ageing joined forces with SPARC (Strategic Promotion of Ageing Research Capacity) to put on three public workshops around the country this year. Each event was full to capacity.

In Reading, over 100 participants were able to question and hear from researchers aiming to keep people on the move – seeking solutions to osteoporosis and muscle weakness, and improving vision and car design.

Audiences in Penzance were brought up to date with research into why people are more prone to infection in later life. And in Hexham an enthralled audience heard how stress can impact on fighting infection, and the role of free radicals and anti-oxidants.

Annual grantholders’ conference

Researchers funded by Research into Ageing gathered at Aston University for two days of scientific presentations and discussion. This annual event allows researchers, along with the members of the Research Advisory Council and invited guests, to meet and share ideas, forge collaborations and enable the charity to assess the progress and impact of its investment.
